New Regulations for Driver's License Issuance: What You Need to Know

The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has recently introduced new regulations regarding the requirements for obtaining a driver's license (Surat Izin Mengemudi or SIM), as stated in Regulation Number 2 of 2023 on the Issuance and Marking of Driver's Licenses.

The new regulations, signed by the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo on February 8, 2023, include Article 9, paragraphs 3 and 3a, which outline the mandatory documents that applicants must provide when applying for a SIM.

According to paragraph 3a, every applicant must submit a photocopy of a certificate issued by an accredited driving education and training institution, along with the original certificate. This requirement applies to individual SIM applicants who have not undergone formal driving education and training or are self-taught.

Furthermore, the driving certificate referred to must be issued by an accredited driving school and should not be older than 6 months from the date of issuance. This requirement applies to applicants seeking an upgrade to a General Vehicle (Ranmor Umum) SIM and individual applicants for a Private Vehicle (Ranmor Perseorangan) SIM.

However, individual applicants who have not undergone formal driving education and training or are self-taught can submit a verification letter issued by a driving school. This provision is applicable to drivers who have learned to drive independently without attending formal training.

The certificates of driving education and training, as well as the verification letter mentioned in paragraph 3a, will be recorded in the SIM database maintained by Korlantas Polri.

These new regulations aim to ensure that drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate vehicles safely on the roads. By requiring certificates from accredited driving schools and verification of driving competency, it is hoped that the quality of drivers on Indonesian roads will be enhanced.

It is important for all prospective SIM applicants to familiarize themselves with these new regulations to ensure a smooth application process. By complying with the requirements, drivers can contribute to safer and more responsible road usage.

Korlantas Polri is committed to continuously improving road safety and ensuring that drivers meet the necessary standards. These regulations are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the overall driving culture in Indonesia and reduce road accidents caused by unqualified drivers.

If you are planning to apply for a driver's license, make sure to check the specific requirements outlined in the latest regulations and prepare the necessary documents accordingly. Safe driving begins with proper training and adherence to regulations, so let's strive for a safer and more responsible driving environment in Indonesia.
